How does it work?

We are a paint-your-own-pottery studio also offering fused glass, mosaics, and acrylic painting (either on the pottery or on canvas).  During your time with us, you select the project you would like to do, and we will set you up with the appropriate materials depending on which type of project you are doing. Then a staff person will explain the process and answer any questions.

Your pottery is ready depending on our kiln schedule (usually 7-10 days). Glass fusion projects can take longer to fire. Mosaics are taken home the same day as well as an acrylic painted piece/canvas. If you can’t finish your pottery in one visit, we will package up your piece for you to take with you and bring back any other time to finish for no extra charge. We can also pour paint ($1.50) per color) for you to take home if you’d like to finish at home. We don’t hold any unfinished pieces in the studio.

Please note:  We hold onto finished pottery for 30 day from the time we first text you for pick up.  If you cannot make it into the studio within that time frame, please call or email us and we can arrange to keep your pieces longer.

What should I bring?

We provide everything you need including a fun, creative, and relaxing atmosphere. We have a great design center which includes stencils, stamps, sponges, and design ideas. All of the paint washes out of clothing so there’s no need for smocks, but we do have smocks for children and booster seats if needed.

How long does it take to paint?

The average person spends about an hour and a half to two hours to pick their pieces and finish painting. With young children it depends on their attention span.  If you are worried about time, we might recommend doing a take home kit or if you don’t finish in the studio, you can take it home and come back another day to finish your piece for no extra charge.

What if I don't finish my piece?

We don’t hold any items unfinished. Any pieces you are working on and complete in the timeframe will be wrapped up and you will take them with you. Then you can come back to finish your work. Everything that is left in the studio gets glazed and fired in the kiln.

How long until I can pick up my pottery?

Typically items are ready in 7-10 days. We will text you when your item(s) are ready for pick up.

Please note: due to our amount of business during the holiday seasons our schedule can change. This usually occurs around Dec. 1 and a few weeks before Mother’s day. Be sure to allow plenty of time if you plan on making a gift.

We will keep your piece for 30 days from the first text letting you know it’s ready for pick up.

What does it cost?

The price of a pottery piece ranges from $6 to $60. For example, mugs are $19 to $25, plates range from $16 to $25.

Fused Glass and Mosaic pieces run from $25 to $60.

Canvases are either $25 or $35.

All Fired Up prices are all inclusive for in store purchases. This means there are no extra fees. The paint, glaze and studio time are included! Take Home Kits may have extra fees to provide those materials that would need to be taken home. Please visit the Take Home Kit tab for more information.

Is my child old enough?

There is something for all ages! Hand and foot prints are popular for our youngest patrons as well as small themed figurines, banks, and boxes.

Are the dishes microwave and dishwasher safe? Are they food safe?

The glaze on ceramic tends to crack when it is heated and cooled too quickly. This is called crazing. To avoid this process we recommend you do not put your pottery in a microwave or dishwasher.

All of our paint and glazes are lead free and nontoxic. After the pieces have been fired, they are safe to use and eat from.

Can I bring food and drinks?

We are BYOB, but you can not leave the studio with an open bottle under DC law. Food is welcomed – as long as it enjoyed within your reservation time frame.

I've never done this before, will somebody help me?

Absolutely! We love to help people with the painting process and design ideas. Please, feel free to ask for any assistance you may need.

About the Owner

A little about the Owner….

I was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Maryland. I received my Bachelors in Education and Art. After returning to the area from Seattle in 2000, I started working at the Made By You pottery studio. In 2004, I bought the store, changed the name to All Fired Up, and made it my own.  Since 2004, we have brought a creative and fun vibe for kids and adults to come together and paint. It was always my vision for the studio to be a relaxing, inspirational, and supportive environment.

In 2006, I started volunteering and donating pottery painting events to the wounded soldiers at the former Walter Reed Medical Center (on Georgia Ave.) Every month, we would visit our troops and paint pottery. It was quite a powerful experience. They would express so much gratitude and share that the process of painting was just as beneficial as their occupational therapy. We visited them for 8 years. Part way through, we pivoted to visit the Naval Hospital to provide pottery painting for traumatic brain injury patients. Because of security protocols, we had to eventually end our visits. The importance of painting and how the process could help heal people on physical and emotional levels solidified this impactful experience of visiting the troops.

Our goal is for people who visit us to have a great experience. For folks to be able to unwind either on their own or with friends through the magic of making art. Talking with you and learning where you are from or learning what projects you are making in the studio is exciting for me. I love the energy that art brings. I always say, “it might be crazy out there in the world, but in the studio, within our walls is our safe place” Where you can be you and express whatever you want!

Growing up in the DC area has provided me with opportunities to visit museums and be surrounded by the arts on different levels. The Renwick, the Portrait Gallery, and the Hirshhorn are just a few of my favorite places to visit. I now bring my daughter to these places too.
If you can visit the studio and try your hand at painting, thank you! Our customers are everything to All Fired Up!
